Day 7: Bible Studies for the Family

Do y'all remember when I said I was motivated to try and draw out my bible study, which didn't work out the way I had planned, but ended up showing me an amazing way to do bible study with my (now) seven year old daughter? Hop over to Day 3 of the 31 Day writing challenge to re-read if you must.

Well, I have bible study groups and resources galore at my finger tips. I can jump around and do more than one if I want or need - I can scale it down if I'm just not feeling up to it. When it comes to my children, it's not so easy... they have to have it there, in front of them; In their hands, laid out step by step, day by day in order to do any type of bible study. They aren't going to just take the initiative and dive into the Word on their own... and who could blame them really - the bible can seem so overwhelming to even adults at times. Where do you begin? The beginning, the New Testament, any certain book? So I began to search for the perfect devotion for each of my children...

I had received a Tween Bible Study book - Around the Word in 60 Seconds - a year or so ago and was going to give it to my oldest as a daily devotional.

However, after reading over a few weeks worth of devotions myself I decided it was more for my 10 year old than for my soon to be 15 year old daughter. That lead me to do some research to find a great bible study/devotional for my 15 year old daughter. It needed to be something that would reach deep, but not take an enormous amount of time and discourage her from wanting to read it each day.

I discovered A Daughters Worth... I'm waiting for it to come in now! I'm excited about this one, and hopefully she will enjoy it as well.

So, I have my youngest daughter following along with me in my own bible study each day - I have the Around the Word for my 10 year old daughter and will soon have A Daughter's Worth for my eldest daughter.

All I need now is a good bible study/devotion for my 13 year old son... any suggestions?!

Really - I need suggestions!

Hopefully these bible studies will leave a lasting impression on my children and lead them on their own journey of Seeking His Face.

Let your light shine...

A very good friend of mine received a word from God for me about a month ago. She sent it to me in a text (as mothers sometimes do in a desperate attempt at reaching out to each other with so little time in the day to accomplish all that needs to be done). The text she sent read:

“Twinkle Twinkle little star how I wonder what you are, up above the world so high like a diamond in the sky. When nothing shines upon you, you shine your little light, then travelers in the dark thank you for your tiny spark. They could not see if you did not twinkle so, they which do not know which way to go… twinkle twinkle little star how I wonder what you are.

It blows my mind how gentle our God is to speak a lullaby to us for a revelation of how much we mean to Him, who He is to us and how much we are needed in this dark world. We just have to keep our spark! Shine bright, even when it’s hard. Love ya!”

Since that little word she gave me, I've “coincidentally” ran across a few printables’ with Matthew 5:14  - "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden." Such as the one below!

I've also stumbled upon Daysprings new jewelry line, Everlasting light, which I feel I MUST have one of soon. (I mean, it’s a divine connection between the word spoken to me and this jewelry line right?) ;) I can’t deny the fact that the Lord is speaking to me. I've gone through a sort of dry spell spiritually lately, to the point of questioning my calling in the ministry… perhaps this was Gods way of telling me to keep that light shining, to hold on to my Faith and to not give up.

Sometimes, the best night of my week are Wednesday nights, when I can walk into my classroom full of young teen girls… so full of promise and eager to learn. I realize that this light is a beacon in the night for those girls. Some of them do not come from Christian homes and are wandering around in the darkness trying to find their way.

I know that I’m nothing special outside of Christ, and I know that if I didn't follow my calling someone else would just take my place… look at how profoundly Esther stepped into her purpose, even to her it was said “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” – Esther 4:14

For such a time as this. – I haven’t been divinely placed in a royal position that could potentially save my people from annihilation… but the word is for us all. If we don’t rise up and step into our calling, someone else will. All of our gifts are given to us from above… we are nothing special without Christ and the many talents and gifts we are given can easily be given to another who would gladly use them for the Kingdom.  I want to be that person… I want to be able to stand before God on judgment day and feel like I used my talents wisely.

“Do not neglect the gift you have,” – 1 Timothy 4:14
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God,” – 2 Timothy 1:6
“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them” – Romans 12:6-8
“A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before the great.” – Proverbs 18:16

I know my top gifts are teaching and writing and I feel so very blessed to be able to do both. I love the girls in my group and even though the enemy tries to make me doubt myself… I know it’s where I belong. I sometimes just need a little reminder…

Isolate your gifts, develop them, use them… let that light shine!

Study The Word Wednesday: What Kind of Attitude Should I Have

I'm sure everyone has heard the terms half empty versus half full, describing a glass of water by now... correct? You know, if you see the glass half full you're most likely positive, if you view the glass as half empty you may tend to look at the negative side of things rather than the positive. Well, our personality and surroundings contribute to how we view the world. No matter how you might view things as of now, one can easily change her point of view to see the brighter side.

Circumstances can change our attitude to be more positive or negative. Of course, in pleasant situations we tend to be happy. When bad times come around we tend to be sad. Although we can't help our initial feelings, we can learn to adapt to the various situations. God does not want us to base our attitude on the happenings around us. He wants us to keep the inner joy that is offered through salvation, it's what He desires for us.

It is difficult to have a positive attitude if we do not possess inner joy. The word joy means to have great delight or happiness. As Christians we should find our joy in being God’s children. Without Him in our lives we would be empty and hopeless. However, because of Christ’s sacrifice, we can live with fullness of joy. If we are truly joyous in Christ, then our attitude will reflect that joy.

  • Proverbs 15:30 - Light in a messenger's eyes brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.
  • Galatians 5:22 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness...
  • 1 Thessalonian 5:16 - Rejoice always,

To acquire a positive attitude, we must relearn how to react to difficult situations. We can learn how to be positive if we learn to focus on the good in life rather than the bad. In every bad situation, something good can usually be found if we look hard enough. However, some people choose only to see the bad.

When we learn to look on the brighter side of things, rather than the downside, we can change our outlooks, which will change our attitudes. I'm sure almost all of us have been around a person a time or two in our lives who is set on always seeing the bad in everything right? Can you remember how you felt when you were around that person?

Being a positive person doesn’t mean we should ignore or disguise negative emotions. There will be times for sadness and hurt. At those times we need to look to God for healing and comfort. However, God wants us to live victorious lives, and we can if we depend on Him. If we work to change our view from negative to positive, we can see the world in a different light when the bad times come. We can also learn how to avoid looking for the bad in good situations.

So many things in the world can bring sadness and despair. If we look to God for His comforting love, we can rest in His care. Once we find the real joy that only God can give, we can change our attitudes. Our attitudes come from the feelings deep inside us. We may be able to hide secret fears and pain, but our attitudes will always give our secrets away.

Today, ask God to help you look at the good or positive sides of situations you will face... He will answer.

Child Training Bible - GIVEAWAY!

I am so excited!!
Why?
Because today I get to (finally) post the Child Training Bible Giveaway!!!

It was delayed so many times due to sicknesses and then this hurricane Isaac. The main reason for this taking so long was the fact that my camera broke, and I wanted to take some awesome pictures for you guys... but this will have to do for now. I can't wait any longer.

For those of you who have been eying this little golden nugget... you now have a chance to win it at absolutely no cost to yourself! Mindy, the creator of The Child Training Bible, has offered to send one of my blessed readers The Child Training Bible... because that's how awesome she is!

For those of you who have not had the privilege of hearing about this wonderful tool as of yet, let me fill you in...

The Child Training Bible is used to teach your children scripture verses that correspond to issues they might be facing. I love that you can put your Child Training Bible together using the bible translation of your choice. I created mine with the NIV translation because it's easier for my children to understand.
This God sent mom and dad of four adorable children sat down and through prayers, determination, and with dedication they put together this Child Training Bible. I think they could probably explain their product better than I can... so I will again put up their video explanation for your viewing pleasure!

Watched it? Good!

The first time I came across this magnificent tool I wanted to say AAGGGHHHH!!!! FINALLY, I have been searching for something like this for so long! Can you imagine the numerous ways this tool can be used? Even the basic principle in itself is amazing!

You can find more information on this product, and the beautiful family, at the ChildTrainingBible website.

I have used the Child Training Bible with my own children countless times since I was blessed with it.

My son is the only boy of our four children... so to entertain himself, he often times enjoys the game "Let's see how fast I can annoy one of my sisters by picking on them".  Whenever he gets in the mood for this game I sit down and have him write the scriptures that correspond with Quarreling or Disobedience if I've instructed him to quite and he did not.

My oldest daughter benefited greatly from reading the scriptures listed in the Wrong Friendships tab. It helped her make a confident decision about a friendship she had been struggling with letting go.

My husband once commented that our children would know these scriptures by heart by the time they left our home... in which I responded "That's the point"

Two sisters who attend the Teen Girls Ministry class I teach told me they didn't have a bible in their home. I was teaching them the importance of reading their bible daily when they told me this. I went to the nearest store and picked up a pretty pink (niv) bible and tabbed their bible with the following topics.
  • Purity
  • Modesty
  • Obedience
  • Wrong Friendships
  • Discouragement
  • The Gospel
I never would have thought of this if it had not been for the Child Training Bible. This will give them a head start in knowing where to look in the bible for scriptures to deal with issues they are facing daily.

What are you waiting for?! Enter to win one for yourself!
Winner will be announced on Sept. 20th!

Study the Word Wednesday: What is Attitude?

What is Attitude?
Attitude, according to a dictionary, is "manner, disposition, or feeling with regard to person or thing. Position or posture of the body." Which leads us to see that attitude is more than just a feeling. A person is able to say what she feels without using actual words. (example, if my children are fighting and I make one of them apologize to the other... even though they might say it with words, their body language usually shows a different attitude.)

The bible is full of examples where attitude is more than mere words.

  • "And Jacob noticed that Laban's attitude toward him was not what it had been" Genesis 31:2
  • "Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed" Daniel 3:19
  • "Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus" Philippians 2:5
  • "For seven days they celebrated with joy the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because the Lord had filled them with joy by changing the attitude of the King of Assyria, so that he assisted them in the work on the house of God, the God is Israel" Ezra 6:22
  • So the Lord said to Solomon, 'Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates" 1Kings 11:11
Charles Swindoll has written an insightful outlook on attitude and its importance, I'm sure most of us have read or heard some of it in our lives:

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
“It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.
“It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill.
“The remarkable thing is—we have a choice every day of our lives regarding the attitude we embrace for that day.
“We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.
“The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. . . .
“I’m convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you.
“We are in charge of our attitudes.”

He shows us that we are in charge of our attitudes. Different kinds of circumstances happen around us, but it is up to us how we react to those circumstances. Our words say much about our attitude, but our actions say even more. Our body language is extremely important. Attitudes are more than feelings. We all have feelings, both good and bad. Attitudes, however, are born from feelings that are primarily present in our lives. If happy, positive feelings are primarily present in your life, you will be a happy, positive person. If you harbor bitterness and unforgiveness deep inside, you will appear bitter and hard to others.

Ask the Lord to search your heart and show you the wrong attitudes you need to correct. No matter how highly we might like to think of ourselves, we have to admit... there's always room for improvement. ;)

Schools In: Night and Morning Routine Printables

Today was the first day back at school for my older three kiddos! Everything ran rather smoothly (surprisingly!)

Everyone got up and dressed with no problem, everything was found right away, and everyone ate breakfast and got to school on time! All that, WITH the alarm clock waking me up an hour late. Now to see if we can continue this perfect first day throughout the rest of this school year.

The baby girl goes for Kindergarten testing this afternoon. She will start next week full time! It really does not feel like she should be starting school yet, she’s still my little baby girl even though we will be celebrating her 5th birthday this weekend.

The big 5! I remember my fifth birthday, I was so excited that when someone asked me how old I was, I could then hold up an entire hand full of fingers, without holding any down!
Yeap, the good old days.

Well, as promised, I have revised the Night Routine spreadsheet, and also created a Morning Routine.  Feel free to use these as you wish.

For my family, I will be printing them as either 8x10 or 5X7s, and placing them in a frame. That away the kids can use a dry erase marker and cross out each activity as they complete it so they can keep track of what they need to do next.  Or maybe I could print them side by side and place them both in an 8X10 frame? I guess I’ll figure out the best way to display them tonight.

I’m trying to decide on a reward system right now, we have tried numerous ones in the past, but nothing worth sticking to thus far.  Any suggestions?!

Tonight I’ll be treating our Friends group (The girls ministry I lead at church) to a pizza and chocolate cup cake party. I know most of them are going to be tired after a long first day back at school… I want to ease things up for them a bit.

I hope the rest of you have a wonderful Wednesday!

Lost Modesty - Christians Wearing Bikinis?

My children received a gift from my mother in law… a swimming pool. It’s a nice framed pool, only three feet tall and twelve feet in diameter. It’s large enough for us to enjoy, but small enough that our little Angelique can touch and feel fairly safe playing in it. She’s still scared of the water, and I’m thankful for that in a way. It brings me to another topic… especially during these hot summer months… modesty.
How do you teach modesty to girls who are too young to understand the concept of lustful eyes? For now, they will have to make do with “because it’s not nice to wear that little in front of people.”
I grew up Pentecostal, I would wear long dresses to swim in whenever we would go swim. When I was older I tried to wear a two piece bathing suit once, and I was so uncomfortable I did not enjoy myself at all. To this day I wear a pair of shorts and a shirt to swim in over my WHOLE piece suit. My girls aren’t so opposed to wearing skimpy nothings. I try my best to make them understand the importance to being covered.
I found this video online, and I really enjoyed hearing about this study; I thought you might as well. It's about three minutes in length, but informative!
Wow.
What we do to ourselves. This brings me to complete a work I had begun on another post... about what us women choose to use as "bait" for a possible husband. Why we are always so unhappy with our catch.
What are your thoughts on being Christian and wearing bikinis?

My Fake Fine.

I’m following along with a book study at Chatting at the Sky!

It’s a bitterly sweet book titled Grace for the Good Girl letting go of the try-hard life.

This week, we were to read chapters 4 – 6, and I did.
Oh boy how I did… I read it in gulps. Refreshing, soothing gulps.

All I can say is WOW. It was as if this woman sat down and watched my life, from adolescence through to today and in first person point of view. She then took all of my insecurities, all of my fears and my “masks” and she wrote a book on them. She has an amazing way with words and I simply can’t get enough of her.

Today we are linking up our answers to the weeks questions.

Without further ado, here are the questions, and my answers…

1.     What is your main reason for hiding behind your fake fine? Is it because you are afraid   (what will they think of me!), lazy (it takes too much work and I need a nap and a bowl of ice cream), or something else?

For me… I think I’m afraid of what I will look like, sitting there “poor mouthing”… being            whiney and complaining about all the difficulties of my life. When I know in my heart that this            poor soul was probably just trying to be polite, and probably has enough problems of her own…            no need to share with her the burden of mine.

2.  In what ways do you resonate with Martha’s good girl ways?

I often feel like it isn’t fair that I have to do everything on my own. I can see Martha there, feverishly trying to make everything perfect for her guests. The areas where we would be considered different? I would never have been bold enough to go out to Jesus and demand him to tell her to help me. And two, I would never have invited him into my house until the work was done. I probably would have said more like “Jesus, please come into my home tonight at such and such a time when everything will be ready for you… see you then.” I would never have invited him in to see everything as it was.

3.  Has your idea of the spiritual disciplines and the purpose of the law shifted in reading chapter six? If so, in what ways?

I think my problem has often been me comparing how good of a Christian I am by how much I do for the church… how many good Christian duties I have checked off my mental (and sometimes physical) lists. I need to remember to sometimes let go, and just bask in His grace.

What Did I DO?!

I've COMPLETELY made over my blog...

It was a big change, I'm still having heart palpitations.... but I feel it was a good move.... I think...

If you have a minute, please let me know what you think of this change.

Here is what my old banner used to look like:

I had originally started this blog because of my etsy shop… which I have closed for an undetermined amount of time to make room for other things in my life.

I feel God is preparing me for something… a change… I’m not sure exactly what it is, but I’m trusting Him with the details.  More and more I've felt His gentle hand nudging me into ministry... starting with the pre-teens girl group I teach on Wednesday nights... and now, well, I'm waiting... but I feel it. I just don't know where I'm going yet.

So… this new blog look… Yes, or No?

Five Minute Friday - REAL

I look at the girls in my class and it forces me to look at myself, it makes me take notice of all of the women around me who were once these little girls and I'm amazed.

I'm amazed at how many of theme are afraid to be REAL, they are afraid to be themselves because they don't think they measure up... to friends, to family, to Gods standards of a Christian.

They feel like they need to alter who they are in order to be liked, to be accepted, to be loved. I challenge them to be REAL.... to be who they are in this world.  Who else can be you if you are not?

God created each and every one of us the way we are for a reason, to fulfill a purpose that only we can fill... if we are trying to be like the person next to us then who will be us?  As I tell these girls to be who they are, to be true to themselves and who God created them to be I wonder if I have ever really followed my own advice?

Do I compare my home to those around me? Do I compare my talents to those around me? Do I  look at other wives and how it looks as if they have a personal hair stylist and makeup artist in their bathrooms every morning? Does it look like everyone except me has a personal maid that sneaks in during the middle of the night to wipe the fingerprints off the walls and windows?!

Why do we compare ourselves to everyone else? Do we not trust that God knew what he was doing when he made us?

When we compare ourselves to the good of others, why don't we look at their struggles as well... I'm sure they are real... they have problems and areas in their lives where they need work, they need help, they need God.

We are all called together to be the body of Christ... there cannot be three hands and four feet... there cannot be twenty toes and only two fingers... we were all created to be different, no one of us created to be above, or better than anyone else. Some are eyes, some are ears, some are the tongue, some the neck... each and every one of us are crucial to the body. All of us play a different role. We should be the best of US we can be to make sure His body is working at the best it can be... for if any member of the body is out of place, the rest of the body struggles.

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mothers womb, I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Psalm 139: 13-14

Christian Card Club?! YES PLEASE!

Yesterday when I arrived home from work, I had a package waiting for me! Two packages actually! I was so super excited, I LOVE packages waiting for me! It's like Christmas time!

What were in the packages you say? ahhh...  it was so wonderful!

I received one package from (in)RL! It contained my beautiful new (in)RL shirt, and a BEAUTIFUL... do you hear me? BEAUTIFUL! Pack of Dayspring cards titled Simply Marvelous!

I was on cloud nine opening and reading each of these cards, seeing in my mind and feeling in my heart just which person in my life each card would be perfect for!  The shirt! Well, I am wearing it today... super comfortable! I like very much!

I told you that I received TWO packages right? Well, at first I had only seen this one... when I went back into my livingroom I noticed on the floor near the coffee table a second, smaller, package. I opened that one to find out it was from Dayspring!!

What could have been better than that?! You see I joined Daysprings heart Connection Card Club!  What is that you might ask?!  Well, you sign up for a monthly subscription... each month you will receive 10 best selling Christian cards! The best part!!! You can go online and pick the pack you would like to receive, or let them surprise you... and if you don't have the room in your budget for the cards in a current month... simply "skip" receiving them at no charge to you. You can also cancel your subscription to the club at any time.

I received a free pack of cards (and should have a free gift on the way) for signing up! I also added to my package a pack of cards I found on sale.  So the small box included TWO ADDITIONAL DAYSPRING CARD PACKS... thats THREE Dayspring Card Packs in one day! Me and my oldest daughter spent the next hour or so reading each card from cover to cover... and I spent additional time picking which card for which person and writing words of encouragement in them to be mailed off.

These cards are BEAUTIFUL! BEAUTIFUL!!!!  Worth so much more than any card you could buy from the store. I promise you I am not getting paid for advertising for them... they are just THAT good!

"Maybe sometimes it's about letting go of who we are to see who we might become"

Hi all,

I recently found a blogger by the name of Sara... well, I didn't find her exactly, I found her blog. You see Sara went to be with the Lord at the end of 2011.  I found her by visiting the (in)courage & (in)RL websites. This woman was so amazing, she touched the lives of so many people... they recently put together a this is just a tiny clip of other bloggers speaking of the many ways this Sara touched their lives. The actual video is 30 minutes long! Just listen to the love pouring out of these people when they speak of her!

If you want to watch the entire 30 minute video, you can find it on THIS post.

I decided that I wanted to know more about her, so I visited her blog.  I'm not finished with my research yet :) but I came upon this post by her and it intrigued me to the point of wanting to share this with you all. There was such wisdom in her words... may we all strive to touch the lives of others the way this woman touched them... and how much more so can we, being that she was confined within the walls of her home... and we have the world available to us.

You can read the entire post on her site HERE

Without further ado...  here are the words of "sweet Sara"...

__________________________________________________________________

In a time when every self help book I read talked about finding groups of like-minded people to further your goals, and being true to who you are over who others may want you to be, I found the opposite to be true. I found that if I went into every situation caring more about what was important to the other person, then who I was grew ten fold.

I learned that it was all about the person, and in order to care about the person I needed to choose to care about what was important to them, and make it important to me.

I was thinking about this because you all saw this photo and said you weren't sure who was more the kid, me or Elias:

_MG_5059
And the truth is that I couldn't have cared less about a car zooming off the bed. But I cared that Elias did. His interest became my interest and his excitement became my excitement, and before I knew it I was filled up with contagious joy.

We all do that for children. Imagine if we did that for other adults as well.
Imagine if we cared more about them feeling happy than us feeling right.
Imagine if we cared more about them feeling known than us feeling superior.
Imagine if we cared more about them feeling accepted than us feeling righteous.
Imagine if we cared more about them feeling joy than us feeling envy.
Imagine if we cared more about them feeling abundance than us feeling security.
Maybe sometimes it's not so much about being who we are at all costs. Maybe sometimes it's about letting go of who we are to see who we might become.
Just something to think about.

Wow... nothing left to say... she said it perfectly, so I will leave you with that.

Thank you so much for stopping by...

Girls Retreat!

We had such an amazing time at the girls retreat this past weekend. I was so thrilled that me and all of my daughters were able to attend! We had a nice time. They had the girls schedules packed so tightly though... it really wore - me - out! I think it's going to take me another 2 weeks to recover from those 2 days!

I took the Friday off work so I could go with my little ones. One of the girls in my missions group was dropped off at my house at 7:15 that morning. We then drove to met up at the church and started our trip at 8:00 a.m. It was a 2 1/2 hour drive to our destination. We made it there around 10:30, unpacked the bus, found our bunks, made our beds and had to immediately begin the activities which started at 11:00! It was non stop after that until 11:00 p.m. ! YES... 11:00 P.M.! I was soooo tired. My legs ached and my eyes burned! lol.

My youngest daughter (4 yrs) looked up at me at one point during the day and said "momma, my legs hurt" I said "I know sweet heart, next year maybe you would like to stay home with daddy instead of coming here with us." She replied "No, I want to come here with you again." I asked "Are you having fun?" She said "YES!".

Girls worshiping during service
I am so glad they had a nice time. Here are some pictures. There would have been more than this, except during one of the church services I dropped my camera, just from my knees in a sitting down position to the carpeted floor... and when I turned it on again to take a photo, the lens came out, and I received an error that it was obstructed. I broke my poor camera :( . Now I need to get another one I guess. Can't live without a camera!

One of the activities was called Beach Ball Blowout...

I snapped a picture of Angelique on her bed during a 15 minute

So she wanted to take one of me... do those eyes look tired?!

and each sponsor was in charge of a group. My group was
named the Squids... they were all sea and beach animal names.

My girls enjoying some concession refreshments!

Me and my girls... does Destiny look tired on the right?!

My two oldest daughters were selected to go before the service
and play a game!

On the way home the next day... I think this explains it all!
