"We live in Chicago and have two wonderful children.  When my now 6 year old daughter started teething, she was drooling a lot.  I was on a search for something cute to absorb it all.  So we came up with the bibs, we have expanded into burpies and blankets.  We will soon be out with our birthday hats and picnic blankets.   Our bibs have become the bib that parents save for the "going out" bib."

We are so thankful that she decided to sell her items to the public!

Hi friends,

It has been an interesting week… how did you all like our first few Feature Friday giveaways?
I had so much fun the last couple of weeks putting our features together, we have lots more interesting shops to come… we have shops featuring everything from beautiful baby clothing, intricate jewelry pieces, sensual beauty products to handmade soaps!

I encourage each of you to stop in each Friday to see our newest features… you can easily access them at any time by clicking the Feature Friday link under my blogs header.

Just some information about the Feature Fridays giveaways for those of you who might be confused about the way it works.  So here it goes..

Each Friday I will Feature one or two shops on my blog. Usually the instructions for entering the giveaway will be listed some where in the middle of the feature. Most of the time you can gain entries by simply leaving a comment for each of the activities you complete, which usually include but aren’t limited to… following One Sewing Mommies blog, leaving a comment stating which item you love most from the featured shop, liking the face book page of the featured shop, following the featured shops blog, purchasing items from the featured shop, and announcing the featured shops giveaway on your social networking sites (blog, twitter, face book etc.)

Comments will be accepted for entry starting as soon as the shops feature appears on the blog (12:01 a.m. Friday) until midnight the following Wednesday.  The winner will be selected by www.RANDOM.org, and will be announced some time Thursday.

I will soon be featuring other blogs on my shop on Write-On Wednesdays. The blogs I feature will usually be those that I thoroughly enjoy reading and following myself, or those that I have ran across and I feel that my friends here will enjoy reading themselves.

I am so excited about becoming more and more active here, and once again I ask… please bear with me as I make changes to the layout and look of my blog over the following weeks, until I find what I believe feels like home for One Sewing Mommie.

Also, if any of you has a suggestion for One Sewing Mommie in regards to the layout or design, please, please don’t hesitate to share it with me!

I am honored to have such a beautiful group of friends here on blogspot, and I look forward to us getting to know each other better as time goes on.

I am hoping to be posting more tutorials and tutorial links soon.

Schools Around the Corner!!!

Hi friends,

Why is it that the weekends pass by so fast? It seems by the time we wake up Saturday morning, half the day has gone by already. I have so been enjoying not having to get the kids up early for school in the mornings this summer, it’s hard to believe there are only a few more weeks left until it all starts again!

Even harder to grasp is that our little mrs. Drama Queen will be going to Jr. High this year.. Aahhhh.. It seems like it was only a couple of years ago I was getting her ready for her first day of school. I remember that day well.

She was excited because she had just learned to tie her shoes by herself, so I waited patiently as she took her time ( around 10 whole minute PER SHOE) tying her shoes very carefully while chanting the little tune to help her remember which steps came next. I don’t remember exactly which one that was, over the years I have made up different ones for each child.

She was SO ready for school, she was a big girl and she would be able to ride the bus home in the afternoons. She had been talking about riding that bus for almost a year before it was time for her to start school, she just couldn’t wait until she could climb on it all by herself.

After she was completely dressed and hair brushed, she stood against the wall as I snapped pictures of her, she looked so small with that big ol’ book sack hanging from her little back. She had the biggest cheesiest grin in each and every picture. I’ll try to remember to post one tomorrow for you all.

I remember driving her up to the school, my heart was racing partly due to the fact that I had never had to trust strangers to take care of my baby girl before, and partly due to not knowing exactly how she would handle it all after we walked through that door. Would she cling to me? Would she cry? Would she realize that she had made a huge mistake and she really just wanted to spend her days at home with her mommie? NOPE, none of the above. You know what she did? When I put the car in park, and opened her door for her to jump out she looked at me and said “okay mommie, you can go home now”.  She was almost upset that I had to walk her inside the school and sign her in for her first day! I still thought, ‘yeah, but she still hasn’t walked inside yet.’ Into the hustle and bustle of little children exploring and some of them I knew would be crying for their parents, I was sure that this all would just overwhelm her.

The moment of truth… I opened the door to the school, and we walked in.  A teacher met us and directed the Drama Queen as to where to hang her book sack.  I watched her to see if I could notice any sign of hesitation from her. Would she look back to make sure I was still there, that I wasn’t really going to be leaving her? Nope, nothing.  She hung her book sack as if she had done that a hundred times before.  The teacher showed me where to sign her in at, and at the same time showed her to her seat at the table where her name had already been tapped down. She sat and waited patiently as the teacher then handed her a game of lace trace.  I stayed for a few more minutes watching her. She was no more interested in me as the man on the moon… I have to say I was a little bit disappointed, I mean, did she love me? I was her mother after all!

So the time came when I realized if I stayed any longer I would begin to look like an overbearing mother and I had to say goodbye.  I know it was foolish of me, but I still kind of thought, ‘when I say that I am leaving, when I say bye, then she will panic and want me to stay’.   NOPE I bent down and gave her a kiss which kind of annoyed her because I got in the way of her seeing which hole to next place the lace through. I then told her bye, and explained that I was leaving and would be waiting at the end of the driveway for her when she came home on the bus that afternoon at which she replied, “Bye!” mater-of-factly.

I drove home that day not sure if I wanted to cry or laugh. Now… now she is heading to Jr. High. The days of loving school have all but faded away.  At least the love of learning, I so wish I could get that back for her.  Now she does still love school, but she loves school for her friends… not exactly the right reasons, although I am glad she has such a large group of close friends.
Since that first day of school all those years ago, I have sent two more of my babies to school for their first day, each of them were completely different experiences from the one before. Next year I will be bringing my baby… our last little baby to school for her first day.  I am not sure what could be harder, the day you bring your first baby to school or the day you bring your last baby to school for the first time. I guess I will soon know.

As always,
Happy Creating,

Lets find out a little more about NICOLESBREASTFRIEND!

     1.       Tell us a little bit about YOU.
I am originally from Jamaica. I have been drawing and creating since I was a little girl. I graduated with a bachelors in fine arts. I have sold my art with furniture stores, target.com costco.com and several private customers. I also do something called belly casting, where I cast a pregnant mommy and create art on it. All of this can be seen on my website, www.visualparadiseinc.com But one of my other true passions is sewing. When I was a little girl I remember my grandmother teaching me how to sew quilts before she passed away from breast cancer. I used to make little outfits  and diapers for my dolls while most kids would be outside.
2.     Tell us about your shop and or blog
My shop is www.etsy.com/shop/nicolesbreastfriends . Recently after having 2 little ones, I became interested in cloth diapering and eco-friendly ways to save money. I was spending a lot of money on disposable breast pads and decided to sew some for myself. I really liked the way they came out and decided to start selling them on etsy, along with other mommy/baby related items.
3.     When did you first begin to create?
I have always had my hand in sewing here and there. I guess I could say since I was a young girl.
           4.      How would you describe the items you make?
Earth friendly, yet vibrant, hip, and fun.
5.      From where does your inspiration come?
I have always been an artistic person, I have to thank God for that! I think a lot of my inspiration and what I am attracted to as far as patterns, derives from nature.
6.      What is your one most cherished possession and why?
Hmmm that’s a hard one, I can’t think of anything at the moment, I really appreciate all that I have, If I could say one thing maybe it would be my talent. Why, I am thankful that God gave me this talent, which allows me to stay at home with my family and make money from doing what I love.
7.      What do you like to do when you are not creating or blogging?
Spending time with family is important to me, we don’t have to do anything special, just as long as we are together.
8.      Tell us a little about where you live in this big ol world.
I live in South Florida where it is sunny most of the time. I have only seen snow once and was happy to go back to the warm weather. Although I am thin blooded, I still enjoy seeing new places.
9.      Where would you like to see yourself in five years?
Continuing to do what I love and being successful at it. Painting, sewing, creating…
10.     Tell us what your ideal weekend would consist of.
Going to the beach and relaxing, hanging out with friends and family.  And of course creating!!

Letter Kay answered some of our blog feature questions...

1. Tell us a little bit about YOU.
Well, where to begin with describing me? I am a recent college graduate, graduating with a BFA in Studio Art. I work at my local church helping with art and print projects. I guess you could say I am a bit of an etsy addict – I get home from work and spend most of the evening on etsy or working on orders, but I love it! I love being productive!
2. Tell us about your shop and or blog
My shop is full of things that I love or would use I’ve always loved vintage items and thought I’d put that love to good use and start selling it! I love the look of the stamps too. I like to create things people can use – not just to look at.
3. When did you first begin to create?
I have always loved making things ever since I was a child. Popsicle sticks, tissue paper, and glue were some of my best friends! I recently graduated with a BFA in Studio Art, concentrating on painting and installation sculpture. I took a printmaking class a year or so ago and this gave me the idea for the stamps that I create. I love making things and trying out new ideas and techniques!
4. What do you like to do when you are not creating or blogging?
Hmm…I’m almost always working on something. I do go to my regular job during the day where I help with graphic design, producing booklets and other print jobs. When I get home I sit down and relax by either watching a favorite show or a bit of a BBC movie and drinking a cup of coffee. Then I get back to work either editing photos or carving stamps. As weird as it may sound, I find carving stamps a bit soothing. The repetition and quietness allows me to think, or not think if I don’t want to.
5. Tell us a little about where you live in this big ol world.
I live in a bit of a small city – I guess it’s not that small, but I lived close to Dallas for about 10 years so it seems it. I love where I live though. It’s not too busy, but not too slow either. There isn’t a whole lot to do, but I’m able to do what I love. Most importantly, the people are friendly!
6. Where would you like to see yourself in five years?
In five years I’d like to be teaching art and own a little shop. I’d love to teach art to elementary children – I love their imaginations and you never know what will come out of their mouths next. They are so amusing! Another dream of mine is to open my own store. Ideally, it would sell handmade and vintage items.
7. Tell us what your ideal weekend would consist of.
My ideal weekend would consist of sipping coffee on the front porch, going to my favorite flea markets and estate sales, getting some work done, and then settling down on the couch to watch a good movie. I know it sounds like all I do is watch movies, but really I don’t It is what helps me relax though

Rhinestone Wedges

1. Tell us a little bit about YOU! Rachel and I are cousins. Rachel is from Baltimore and I (Nicole) are from Toronto and we are both university students. We love fashion and we LOVE shoes!
2. Tell us about your shop! It all started when we walked into an expensive shoe store and saw the most gorgeous shoes! They were black wedge heels covered in coloured stones, they were also $300. We thought "Hey! We can do that ourselves!" and our first pair of rhinestone shoes were born. We received such positive feedback that we knew we had to share our shoes with others. That is when we started our shop Rhinestone Revolution!
3. When did you first begin to create? We are both creative people and like experimenting in different areas. Rachel loves cooking and baking and I love writing. Working with our hands is another creative outlet we love which led us to make our own shoes.
4. How would you describe the items you make? The items we make are all about letting loose. Our rhinestones are different colours and sizes and no two items are ever the same. They sparkle and shine and draw attention! We love making them and we love wearing them!
5. From where does your inspiration come? Our inspiration originally came from the shoes we saw in the expensive shoe store when we realized that amazing shoes do not need to be over priced! We go window shopping for our inspiration now. If we see something we like and know we can rhinestone it we'll buy it.
6. What is your one most cherished possession and why? We love our pets, I don't know if that is considered a possession but nonetheless we love them. I have two dogs and Rachel has a dog and a rabbit.
7. What do you like to do when you are not creating? We love baking and relaxing on the beach. We love going to festivals where people exhibit their hand made items. And we love surfing etsy!
8. Tell us a little about where you live in this big OL world! Rachel is from Baltimore where the inner harbour is a beautiful place to hang out. I am from Toronto which is where both of us are living now. Toronto is a great place to draw inspiration from! We love visiting all the amazing places it has to offer like Little India, where everything glitters and our Harbourfront where the international Festival exhibits things from around the world.
9. Where would you like to see yourself in five years?  We both hope to be independent business owners. Our futures are still in the air but we wouldn't be happy unless we were being creative.
10. Tell us what your ideal weekend would consist of. Our ideal weekend would consist of us making shoes in the sun!

 1. Tell us a little bit about YOU.
My name’s Melissa.  I’m 2 years old and I’m married and a stay at home mom to my 13 month old son, Milo and am expecting a little girl in September.  I live in the Pacific Northwest, so far north that it’s almost Canada.
2. Tell us about your shop and or blog
In my shop, I sell a little bit of everything.  I started my shop selling things that I was making for friends or family for gifts, and also because with a new little one, I found myself having a lot of down time at night while my husband was at work and I needed a hobby.  I never knew how much work it would take to actually run a shop on etsy.com when I started, and I wish I was a little more prepared, but it’s super fun and I love it.
3. When did you first begin to create?
I learned how to knit when I was 16, my friends mom showed me how.  I then learned how to crochet from a teach yourself kit.  So, I’ve been working with yarn crafts for a little over 4 years now, and I love it.
4. How would you describe the items you make?
The items that I make are for people who like bright things.  I love love love bright colors.  When I go into a yarn store, the first color that I pick up is always something bright and vibrant.  As far as which type of product I sell, I try to make a little bit of everything.  I make washcloths, face scrubbies, scarves, hats, baby items, fingerless gloves, and I want to start making crochet rugs as well soon.  I am very ambitious J
5. From where does your inspiration come?
I was actually inspired to open my etsy store by a bucket list that I wrote with my husband.  He was bored one day at work and came home and showed me his, so on our way down to his parents’ house (they live 3 hours away) I began to write my own in my journal I had brought.  Because I have always loved farmers markets, I thought about Pike’s Place Market in Seattle and the many times I had been there and how amazed I was that people actually could sell something that they made.  So, on my list I wrote down, “sell something I have made”.  Then, when I had my son, I made him a hat and people started complimenting me on it, and I pretty much opened shop the next day.  And so, I guess my inspiration is just the fact that someone wants to buy the things that I can create with my own hands.  It’s amazing to me!
 6. What do you like to do when you are not creating or blogging?
People have time for things other than creating?! ;) I spend a lot of my time with my son.  My husband works a lot, so he and are a like two peas in a pod.  I also love to write, scrapbook, network, and try to keep my house clean.
7. Tell us a little about where you live in this big old world.
Like I said before, I live in the pacific northwest near Bellingham, Washington.  I both love and hate it here because although it does rain almost every day of my life, everything up here is so green and beautiful, it almost makes it worth it.  We moved to Bellingham to attend Western Washington University, which my husband is still attending and will graduate from in the winter, and then who knows where we’ll be.  I hope somewhere where we can own a pool and actually use it ;)
8. Where would you like to see yourself in five years?
In five years, I hope that I am attending classes somewhere and working on a degree.  I would love to be a creative writer, but the more practical part of my brain says I should go to school for accounting. I would like to own my own home since we are in a 2 bedroom apartment right now and it is definitely getting cozy.  I would like to have traveled somewhere other than the only three states that I have been to, Washington, Oregon and California.  I also hope that I am still creating in five years, whether my shop remains on etsy or farmers markets, or where ever.  I really value the creative process, and I would hate for that not to be part of my life.

Where can we find you?
